At Woolpit Nurseries, we recommend planting spring flowering bulbs from September to November. These bulbs, including Daffodils, Snowdrops, Tulips, and more, will bloom beautifully the following spring, creating a vibrant garden spectacle. Come summer, they’ll go dormant, ready to shine again next year.
For the best display, plant your spring garden bulbs in a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Although some, like snowdrops and narcissi, thrive in partial shade.
Create stunning displays in borders among perennials, beneath deciduous shrubs, or at the base of trees. Pots and lawns also make fantastic homes for these bulbs. Watch them naturalize over the years, adding a touch of nature’s beauty to your outdoor space.
Planting depth matters for vibrant blooms. At Woolpit Nurseries, follow the rule: plant bulbs at 3 times their depth. But, exceptions like Iris reticulata (10-15cm) and Fritillaria meleagris (10cm) apply. Avoid planting too shallow to prevent curious critters from digging them up!
Planting spring bulbs is best in well drained soils, in heavy soils add garden compost or sand into the hole before planting. Here’s how:
1. Dig a hole to the right depth, using a trowel or bulb planter.
2. Place bulbs pointy side up, following packet instructions.
3. Space bulbs well.
4. Fill the hole and mark if needed.
5. For autumn planting, let rain do the work. But in spring water after planting.
At Woolpit Nurseries, we believe that a few hours spent planting spring bulbs in pots during autumn can yield a spectacular display in the new year. You have options – pot different bulbs separately to change up your garden’s look or layer them in pots for continuous blooms. For shade gardens, consider woodland anemones, narcissi, and snowdrops.
Here are some of our top picks:
Crocus: Perfect for small pots, they shine as tabletop displays.
NarcissusTete-a-Tete: This small but lovely daffodil thrives in containers.
Tulips: Excellent for containers, they adore good drainage and sunlight.
Snowdrops: Among the earliest bloomers, they bring late winter charm.
Muscari (Grape Hyacinths): These blue beauties are easy to grow and a hit with pollinators.
Visit Woolpit Nurseries for a stunning selection of spring bulbs to elevate your pot gardening game.
Planting spring bulbs in containers is easy and versatile! Use a peat-free, multi-purpose compost for a great display. Follow these steps:
1. Add crocks to the pot for drainage.
2. Layer compost (10cm for large pots).
3. Place bulbs (1-2cm apart, pointed end up).
4. Top with compost, water well.
5. Rotate pots for continuous blooming joy! Consider replacing bulbs annually for the best results.
